designed to minimise extrusion of graphite normally assciated with reducing ferrules in standard "Swagelok" fittings

ALL other components are made of stainless steel

fitting is OK for use up to 450-degC

a minimum clearance between the SS components and the column reduces risk of scratching the silica column in use.

Advantages of Graphite Ferrules

  • High Temperature use - 450C or higher in a capture oxygen free environment.
  • Do not flow during temperature cycling (like Teflon) - OK even for subambient temperatures without becoming brittle.
  • Do not "soften" or dry out at high temperatures like Vespel - no tendency to "crack" or stick to glass
    or metal.
  • With care GFs are re-useable.
  • In fact . . . The perfect sealing material for any GC application
  • Use for standard pipe fittings - Cost saving benefits for prototyping systems as the ferrule will slide off the tubing and doesn't have to be cut off like metal ferrules.

Disadvantages
For GC/MS operation - particularly for vacuum operation at column outlet.

  • GFs have a laminar structure as they are made from highly compressed graphite tape
     - consequently under vacuum operation they can tend to diffuse air into the GC/MS system, when used in a standard Swagelok-type fitting.
    - often of no consequence even in GC?MS unless scanning at amu <45
  • Under normal GC use the miniscule amounts of "leaked" air are generally of no consequence
  • This limitation is more a function of inappropriate fitting design - the tendency is to use standard type Swagelok fittings as a "universal" connector and then reducing ferrules for connecting capillary columns into the system
     - however for this application these are often inadequate as there is no physical support for the GF in the oversize hole
     - the GF can tend to fragment.
A capture-type fitting is preferred for this type of application and this largely eliminates the problem !
  • For MS jet seperators in particular this GF fragmentation can lead to "disastrous blocked jets.
  • REDUCING Ferrules
  • These must NOT be overtightened in any Detector Port application as the graphite will tend to extrude and possibly fragment into the empty hole
  • Ideally a 1/16", 1/8" or 1/4" "reducing Port Adaptor fitting is recommended to minimise any graphite fragmentation ( which can in turn block an FID jet for example . .; .
  • DRU-XM where X is Port fitting M is the hole size in adaptor ( 1mm, 0.75mm or 0.5mm as appropriate ) OR Make-up Gas Reducer Fitting DRT-XM

Graphite/Vespel ferrules are preferred for GC/MS application.
YES ! We make these as well !
